According to reports from multiple sources in Europe, the latest version of Samsung’s Gear VR headset has now gone on pre-order in at least two countries on the continent. While the US is expected to get the commercial edition of the device at some stage during this fall, the latest reports out of Europe seem to indicate that the region might also get the headset at about the same time. According to listings on official Samsung websites in the Netherlands and Germany, the price will be €99.99 in the former and €117.85 in the later. The devices are said to start shipping from this weekend itself – the 21st of this month to be precise – and Samsung Germany lists a tentative delivery date of December 1st. The device is expected to hit store shelves in the US this fall at a price of $99 and T-Mobile has already announced that it will start selling the device from the 27th of this month in the country.
The first generation Gear VR ‘Innovator Edition’ was originally announced back in September last year and launched a few months later in December. The device was compatible only with Samsung’s last generation flagship phablet, the Galaxy Note 4. The ‘Innovator Edition’ of the current generation Gear virtual reality headset, meanwhile, was launched back in March this year, and is compatible with Samsung’s latest premium smartphones, namely, the Galaxy S6, S6 Edge, S6 Edge+ and the Note 5. Of course, the Note 5 is yet to be launched across Europe, but users interested in the Gear VR will still have at least three different options of smartphones to choose from.
The two companies behind the headset, the Suwon, South Korea-based Samsung Electronics and Menlo Park, California-based Oculus VR, has made a few changes to the current generation model from the first generation version, which includes the addition of a small fan inside the device to prevent the lens from fogging up. The current version also uses a slightly smaller display as compared to the last generation devices, thereby having a smaller field of view. As for the availability of the devices in Europe, it remains to be seen when they finally start shipping to paying customers, but given the dates being mentioned on official Samsung sites, it is highly unlikely that early-birds will have to wait too long to get their hands on the gadgets.
