Now that Samsung’s consumer version of the Gear VR headset is available for shipping in the United States, there are likely going to be a lot more users getting to experience the technology. It also helps that this new model now supports multiple Samsung phones including the Samsung Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge, as well as the Galaxy Note 5 and Galaxy S6 Edge+. For those who are unaware, the virtual reality technology that powers the Gear VR comes from Oculus, who is also developing their own VR headset for use with a PC, and they have just announced a new store (rather a new section within the existing store) on the Gear VR called ‘Oculus Concepts.’
While apps and games were already available on the Gear VR through the Oculus Store, the new Oculus Concepts section will be geared towards developers being able to post early versions of their apps and games that are still a work in progress so to speak, giving Gear VR owners a chance to test out the content before it reaches completion. it works for both developers and viewers, as developers can obtain feedback on early access software, and viewers are able to experience the latest of VR experiences before they hit the primetime. This isn’t too unlike Steam’s Early Access content which allows PC gamers the chance to purchase (or download free) and play content that is still in development. In a way, it can allow the user to help shape the direction of the content.
The great thing about Concepts for those who are opting to pick up the Rift is that Oculus also has plans to introduce it to the consumer Rift models when they eventually hit store shelves, it is however gettings its debut on Gear VR as this particular platform is already available, which makes for a perfect place to test the waters and see what needs to be fine tuned or changed if anything. If you’re a VR enthusiast and are looking to grab a Gear VR for yourself, Oculus Concepts is available as of now on the Gear VR.
