OnePlus Announces Its Marshmallow Update Plans

Through a post on its official forums, the CEO of Chinese smartphone vendor OnePlus, Mr. Carl Pei, has announced that the company plans to soon roll out the much-awaited Marshmallow update to its current lineup of smartphones, which includes three devices, including the company’s last-generation flagship, the OnePlus One, the 2015 flagship, OnePlus 2 and the newly-launched mid-ranger, OnePlus X. While Mr. Pei mentions Q1, 2016 as the ETA for the update being rolled out to the two flagship devices launched by the company over the past couple of years, there’s no time frame given as yet for updating the OnePlus X. According to the post by Mr. Pei, “We are working hard to bring Marshmallow as soon as possible to the OnePlus X, and will update you on a time frame at a later time”.

While both the OnePlus One and OnePlus 2 are expected to get their Marshmallow updates early next year, those running OxygenOS on the OnePlus One might well have to wait a bit longer than their counterparts running Cyanogen OS. That’s because according to the announcement, “For the OnePlus One, Cyanogen OS will be updating to Marshmallow in the first quarter of 2016 … We will be updating the community build of OxygenOS for the OnePlus One when time allows”. OnePlus 2 owners of course, aren’t expected to have any such issues as the device ships with OxygenOS, which is the one that will be getting update to Marshmallow at some stage in the coming months. The company has also said that it won’t be “creating an API for the current fingerprint implementation in OxygenOS … since we’re switching over to the standard Android M implementation soon”.

OnePlus of course, is a Shenzhen, Guangdong-based smartphone brand that’s owned by Chinese electronics major Oppo, which itself, is a subsidiary of BBK Electronics. The OnePlus brand was founded back in 2013 by Mr. Carl Pei and former Oppo chief, Mr. Pete Lau and has released three smartphones over the past two years. While OnePlus One was its first (and only) release last year, this time around, the company launched the OnePlus X mid-ranger late last month, after having introduced its sophomore effort, the OnePlus 2, earlier this year.
