Previously leaked reports have suggested that the world’s largest manufacturer of Android devices, Samsung Electronics, will be launching two different variants of its upcoming flagship smartphone, the Galaxy S7. While one of the variants will supposedly be powered by Samsung’s in-house Exynos 8890 chip with custom ‘Mongoose’ cores, the other one will have Qualcomm’s recently-announced flagship SoC, the Snapdragon 820, which, according to recent reports, will also get an octa-core avatar (along with the already-unveiled quad-core version) that will apparently come at some stage during next summer. While the Galaxy S7 has long been rumored to come in two different versions next year, reports now indicate that the S7 Edge will also ship in two distinct variants – one powered by the Qualcomm-made chip and another by the Exynos chip made in-house by Samsung.
According to SamMobile, the blog that covers the South Korean company extensively, next year’s Galaxy S7 will come with the model number ‘SM-G930x’, while the Galaxy S7 Edge will sport ‘SM-G935x’ as its identifier, with ‘x’ being the wildcard that will denote the carrier or the region the model is headed to. However, with each device coming in two different variants, there will be plethora of diverse model numbers that will be present on the devices, accounting for different regions, carriers and the like. The blog is also claiming to have come across a leaked image of what looks like a mobile screenshot posted on a website in China, which apparently reveals the exact model numbers of both devices on a number of carriers across many regions, including the US.
Taking a look at the Snapdragon 820 variants first, Verizon will apparently carry the G930V (Galaxy S7) and the G935V (S7 Edge), whereas Sprint will carry the G930P (S7) and the G935P (S7 Edge) on its network. As for US Cellular, the devices on its network will come with model numbers G930R4 and G930R5 respectively. There are two further Snapdragon variants with numbers G9300 and GG9350, both of which are reportedly China-bound, although there’s no word on which carrier.
As for the Exynos variants, the G930F and G935F will reportedly be the unlocked editions of the S7 and the S7 Edge respectively, whereas T-Mobile will apparently carry the G930T and the SM-G935T, while the G930A and the G935A will come to AT&T. Canada is poised to get the G930W8 and the G935W8, while Samsung’s home country, South Korea, will get three versions of each of the Galaxy S7 and the S7 Edge. The model numbers will be SM-G930 S/K/L and SM-G935 S/K/L respectively for the two devices, probably depending on which version is headed to which carrier.
The source of the original report however, is yet to be confirmed, so there’s no saying whether these will hold up in the end, but seeing as multiple sources have already reported about both Snapdragon and Exynos chips being used for Samsung’s upcoming flagships, it isn’t hard to imagine a slew of model numbers being needed to denote different version of each handset.
