Smartphone cameras are getting better and better all the time. We’ve seen a number of smartphones which are capable of taking great pictures launched this year, including the Xperia Z5 series, Samsung’s flagship offerings and the Nexus 6P, for example. The Nexus 6P sure was a surprise in many aspects, and the most surprising feature was its camera. The device sports a 12.3-megapixels snapper on the back, but considering the sensor Huawei and Google used here, in combination with software, the Nexus 6P is one of the best performers out there.
That being said, the Nexus 6P is the third-placed smartphone as far as camera quality goes according to DxOMark. Google’s newest flagship is one of the best performers out there, and surprisingly enough, BlackBerry Priv managed to do really well according to DxOMark’s standards as well. The company’s newest smartphone, and their first ever Android-powered handset, scored 82 in DxOMark’s tests. Now, DxOMark is one of the most reliable camera testing sites out there, and there are only a handful of devices ahead of BlackBerry according to their tests. It is worth mentioning that BlackBerry Priv scored 81 in a video test, slightly less than in image-taking test. Anyhow, BlackBerry Priv packs in an 18-megapixel camera with Schneider-Kreuznach lens (27mm, f/2.2 aperture) lens on the inside. The Phase Detection Auto Focus (PDAF) is available here, and so is the dual-LED flash next to the camera itself. There are a number of modes available on the inside, and the device simply performs well.
The BlackBerry Priv sports a 5.4-inch QHD (2560 x 1440) AMOLED display along with 3GB of RAM and 32GB of internal storage (expandable up to 200GB via a microSD card). The phone is powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 808 64-bit hexa-core SoC, and there’s also a 2-megapixel shooter available up front. The 3,410mAh non-removable battery can be found on the inside. and Android 5.1.1 Lollipop comes pre-installed here with BlackBerry’s custom UI on top of it. The most distinctive feature of this smartphone is its sliding QWERTY physical keyboard, and even though it’s not exactly one of the cheaper phones out there, it seems to be selling really well.
