General Motors has already announced Android Auto for their four major brands (Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet and GMC), and now they are making an announcement for their UK car maker Vauxhall, who will be bringing Android Auto over to their small car, the Adam. In addition to Android Auto, Vauxhall is also adding OnStar cellular connectivity, and Apple’s CarPlay. So those with iOS will be excited as well. Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are already slated to be available on every Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet and GMC vehicle starting in the 2016 model year. So it shouldn’t be a huge surprise to see Vauxhall do the same, but it appears they are starting out small right now, with just the Adam.
As is the case with most cars adding Android Auto or even Apple’s CarPlay, there is an extra fee to get that package. Vauxhall will be asking an additional £495 on top of the regular price of the Adam, to get the “Technical Pack”. With that pack, you do also get some other nifty bonuses, which are nice to see. If you don’t purchase the technical pack when buying the car, you won’t be able to go back in later and get it upgraded with that pack. It just doesn’t work that way, unfortunately.
Android Auto is still fairly new, although we are seeing more and more cars and trucks coming out with Android Auto built in. We’ve already taken a look at the 2015 Hyundai Sonata as well as the 2016 Volkswagen Golf-R, and they’ve integrated Android Auto quite well into their infotainment system. So we’d expect the same from Vauxhall and other manufacturers that are due to launch their offerings in the next few months. Chevrolet also has a few models available with Android Auto, although their entire fleet won’t have it for another 6 months or so, once every model is updated throughout the model year. Right now they have the Sonic and Silverado rolling off of the lot with Android Auto, and more coming soon. Of course, if you don’t want to buy a brand new car for Android Auto, there are some great third-party units from Pioneer and Kenwood.
