It has been quite a while since Google announced the release of Android Marshmallow, but most carriers and OEMs have only recently started rolling out the new software to their smartphones and tablets. While Taiwanese vendor HTC has taken the lead in rolling out the new software to a number of its premium devices over the past few weeks, other tier one vendors like LG have also updated a few of its handsets to the latest and greatest version of the world’s most popular mobile operating system. Now, it seems to be the turn of South Korean consumer electronics major, Samsung Electronics, to finally start rolling out the much-awaited update to the two aforementioned flagship smartphones from last year, as per reports coming out of the company’s home country this Saturday.
The updates are reportedly available for the SM-920S model of the Galaxy S6 and the SM-925S version of the S6 Edge; both of which are the SK Telecom variants of the respective devices. While Samsung hasn’t exactly been super quick in rolling out Marshmallow to its handsets, owners of the Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge will now finally be heaving a sigh of relief at the latest news. It’s worth remembering that Samsung had rolled out pre-release versions of Android 6.0.1 to its beta testers late last month, so the broader rollout of the final stable version was expected to happen sooner rather than later, but this new development must still be music to the ears of the owners of the two devices.
One thing of note, however, is that the update is apparently only rolling out in South Korea, so it might take a while before the new software is available to all users of the two devices globally. Samsung, of course, hasn’t announced anything officially, so there’s no ETA for the international rollout of the latest ROMs. There’s also no word currently on when the Note 5 or the S6 Edge+ might receive Marshmallow, but it probably shouldn’t take a whole lot longer, seeing as the company has already got the ball rolling now. Either way, it’s good to see that even as Samsung prepares for the launch of its much-rumored next-gen flagships, the company hasn’t forgotten its current lineup just as yet. Hopefully now, the new ROMs will start rolling out globally sooner rather than later.
