One of the features that Google introduced with Android 6.0 Marshmallow was showing users the latest security patch that they have installed on their device. It shows up under Settings and under About Phone. Along with all the other data regarding the build number, software version, and much more. Every Android smartphone featuring Android Marshmallow has this feature. So why exactly is this news that it’s in Oxygen OS 2.2.0 for the OnePlus X? Simply because the OnePlus X is still on Android 5.1.1 Lollipop.
That’s right, the update to Oxygen OS 2.2.0 brings the OnePlus X up to date, but it does not bring it to Marshmallow. It appears that OnePlus’ team is still working hard on the update to Marshmallow for the OnePlus X, but decided to roll this feature out to the OnePlus X now. With this update, it also brings the OnePlus X to the latest security patch, which as of today is January 1st, 2016. But with February right around the corner – less than 48 hours away – it won’t be the latest security patch for long, unfortunately. It’s still a great idea to bring this into the settings under Lollipop however. Considering most of OnePlus’ users are power users and are going to want to be sure they are on the latest security patch. Especially with all of the vulnerabilities that surfaced in 2015.
The OnePlus X was OnePlus second smartphone launch of 2015, and their third overall, behind the OnePlus One and OnePlus 2. The OnePlus X is essentially a budget device. While it still has some pretty high-end specs, it comes in cheaper than the OnePlus 2, which was already pretty cheap in the $300-range. The OnePlus X features a 5-inch 1080p display, powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 processor along with 3GB of RAM and 16GB of internal storage. It also has a micro SD card slot. The first device from OnePlus to feature such a thing. There’s also a 13MP camera around back and a 8MP camera around front. Not a bad device for just $249, and it’s now invite-free, which makes it an even better deal. While it’s not on Marshmallow just yet – rest assured they are working on it – it does support the latest security update. Which is always important.
