Philips may be one of the biggest and most respected electronics brands in Europe, but the company’s smartphone business hasn’t always brought it the sort of results it would have ideally hoped for. That doesn’t mean the company isn’t gainfully soldering on, and although Philips doesn’t sell its smartphones in every market around the world, the company does make some decent devices. That being said, the Amsterdam-headquartered Dutch company is apparently readying a new touchscreen device, which has now been certified by China’s telecom equipment certification board – TENAA. The device comes with the model number S711L, and is seemingly an effort by the company to take a stab at the small tablet market.

That’s because according to the listing on the official TENAA website, the device comes with a 7-inch touchscreen panel, but apparently, it also has voice-calling facilities, making it a giant mobile phone. While smartphone display sizes have been growing in leaps and bounds with every passing year, most people still tend to draw the line at 5.5 – 5.7-inches for the most part, with the poor sales of the Nexus 6 last year mainly attributed to the large 6-inch panel on Google’s 2014 flagship handset. Be that as it may, gigantic phones are nothing new, and small tabs with voice-calling has been a niche segment that has seen products from such manufacturers as Dell, Lenovo and even Samsung before, not to mention a number of China-based device makers.

As for the device in question from Philips, it features a 7-inch Full HD display, and is powered by an octa-core 1.3 GHz CPU of unspecified make. It comes with 3 GB of RAM and 32 GB of internal storage, but there’s also a microSD card slot for capacity expansion. There’s a 13-megapixel primary camera and an 8-megapixel front-facing shooter for selfies and video chats. The phablet will be a fairly thin one for its size, seeing as it measures only 8.5 mm in thickness, but weighs 260 grams, making it significantly heavier than most regular smartphones. The upcoming gadget will come with Android 5.1 Lollipop pre-installed, but that’s pretty much all we about the device as of now. We’ll keep you posted as more we get more info about it.
