Samsung’s new flagship phones are some of the most anticipated devices that will launch in the near future. Many rumors and alleged leaks of some components of the Galaxy S7 have surfaced, but information is still contradictory. At first, it was believed that four models would be launched simultaneously, two flat-screened Galaxy S7 and two curved-screened Galaxy S7 Edge variants. In both cases, the two handsets would come in different sizes. New information suggests that the regular Galaxy S7 will be similar in size to its predecessor, while the Galaxy S7 Edge could be offered in a larger size.
A report from Venture Beat which focuses on information gained from a “person briefed on the company’s plans” seems to confirm this information as well as some other features that have been rumored for the Galaxy S7. The regular Galaxy S7 is supposed to sport a 5.1-inch display and the Edge variant is supposed to integrate a 5.5-inch screen, both of them would retain the QHD resolution from last year’s models. Supposedly, the displays in the new phones would feature always-on functionality to view notifications and additional information at a glance, with little battery consumption. Both models will integrate larger batteries, even though those will still be non-removable. The Galaxy S7 will integrate a 3,000 mAh battery and the one in the Galaxy S7 Edge would be 3,600 mAh, which is a significant capacity bump as the Galaxy S6 was powered by a 2,550 mAh battery and the Edge version included a 2,600 mAh. Wireless charging capabilities will still be available, and it’s supposed to be fast, the Galaxy S7 would charge in 2 hours and the Galaxy S7 Edge would charge in 2.2 hours.
Most rumors suggest that Samsung will use the Exynos 8890 processor in these devices, at least in some of their variants. 4 GB of RAM would be available on the Galaxy S7 and there are two internal storage options, 32 GB and 64 GB. The big news here is that Samsung will offer expandable storage with microSD cards (up to 200 GB), this feature was greatly missed on last year’s devices. The main camera is supposed to sport a lower 12-megapixel resolution, but the module would feature a f/1.7 aperture and it will improve low-light pictures. The camera hump from the main camera will supposedly be reduced and another hardware feature for the Galaxy S7 phones is their IP67 certification, making them water and dust resistant. The phones are said to launch towards the end of February and to become available shortly after.
