Other than getting a new device, nothing brings more excitement than receiving a major software update…I am not talking about Android 5.0 to Android 5.1.1…we are talking about jumping from Android 5.0.1 to Android 6.0 Marshmallow. It is one thing for a manufacturer to upgrade last year’s model, but it is almost unheard of for them to go back any further, but that is exactly what LG is doing by providing the LG G3 with a Marshmallow update. On Rogers’ latest list of upgrades, they show the upgrade for the LG G3 as “Coming Soon!” Of course, Rogers covers themselves with their disclaimer – “Making sure these dates are accurate is our top priority. Sometimes, things change beyond our control so all dates are subject to change. Thank you for your understanding.”
If you remember, the LG G3 was one of the most highly anticipated smartphones of 2014 for two reasons. One, because of its Quad HD (QHD) display – we could not wait to see what 538 pixels-per-inch (PPI) would look like. Secondly, rumors were flying around that the body was a brushed metal – and from all of the pictures floating around that is exactly what it appeared to be. After all of the anticipation, the display was sharp, but rather dull looking and it was just a plastic back with a brushed metal look. However, the LG G3 was a delight to hold and besides, it looked like metal.
Specifications were all great for the day – 5.5-inch LCD QHD display with a resolution of 2560 x 1440 pixels. The brains of the LG G3 is the tried and true 32-bit Snapdragon 801 quad-core processor clocked at 2.5 GHz with 3GB of DDR3 RAM and 32GB of internal memory with expansion vis a microSD card slot. The camera sported a 13MP sensor with dual-tone LED flash, OIS+ and a new Laser autofocus for quicker and more precise focusing. The LG G3 packs a 2.1MP front-facing camera (FFC) for selfies and video chatting and it comes with an FM radio. It was last upgraded to Android 5.0.1 in February 2015. With almost a year’s waiting time, it is really great to see LG upgrade this old warhorse to the latest Android 6.0 Marshmallow – this says a lot about LG’s commitment to their devices.
