Razer is a firm that moat people will start thinking of mechanical keyboards, fancy gaming mouse and the colors black and green when hearing the name. The company has branched out into fitness trackers before with the Razer Nabu and the Nabu X, and this year they’re introducing a smartwatch, but it’s not what you think. During CES 2016 we’ve seen Huawei and Samsung introduce new variants of their smartwatches, as well as Casio jump on the Android Wear train, but Razer is going it alone with the Nabu Watch and Nabu Watch Forged. Channeling rugged designs of Casio G-Shock watches from a decade ago, the Nabu Watch is all business, and it’s an intriguing piece of hardware.
There are two displays and two brains inside of the Nabu Watch. There’s a classic digital watch with calendar display included, which feature world time, a stopwatch and other digital watch functions. This part of the watch runs on a simple button-cell battery and will last for a single year on charge. Joining this is the Razer Nabu hardware, a small OLED display that shows your step count, calories burned, distance travelled and of course subtle notifications like the original Razer Nabu does. This side of the Nabu Watch needs recharging once every week or so. The rugged casing will ensure the Nabu Watch can withstand 5ATM underwater, will handle dust and water with no problems and it all pairs nicely with either Android or iOS.
There are two versions of the Nabu Watch, the Standard version – which will cost $149 and be available later this month – and the Forged Edition which features machined stainless steel buttons and a less in-your-face look, this will cost $199 and is available for pre-order right now. What Razer have put together here is a digital chronograph and simple fitness tracker in one sporty-looking package. It does appear to be quite chunky, but given that it’s a watch that will always be a watch for a year-straight is impressive. All settings are adjustable from the Nabu app and Razer is hoping people will use the Nabu Watch day-in, day-out to get a workout wherever and whenever.
