Samsung may not have been the fastest out of the blocks in rolling out Marshmallow to its flagship smartphones, but the company is now looking to somehow make up for lost time by releasing the Android 6.0 update globally to a number of its latest flagship handsets, including the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge. The company has already announced the rollout of the much-anticipated update for the two aforementioned smartphones through a post on its official blog earlier in the day, and now the company has done the same for users of its Galaxy S6 Edge and Galaxy S6 Edge+ handsets in its home country of South Korea. There’s still no official word, however on when the Note 5 might get the new software.
Regarding some of the changes that will come about because of the incoming update, Samsung says that the phones will see increased functionality of its curved side panels, as the latest update will allow users to optionally widen those panels to 550 pixels instead of the 220 pixels, which is the case currently. Users will also be able to pin additional apps on the edges as part of the ‘Quick Tools’ feature, making access to things like Flashlight, Compass and other such applications easier. The usual suite of native Marshmallow features are also expected to come along with the new software, but Samsung hasn’t provided an extensive changelog just as yet, apart from detailing the additional benefits of the curved edges, once Marshmallow hits the devices.
It will be interesting to see how long the company takes to roll out the new software globally, seeing as the latest announcement is valid only for South Korean users, as mentioned already. Samsung Electronics is also prepping to launch its next-gen flagship smartphone, the Galaxy S7, which has already seen a whole lot of leaks in recent days. Samsung has officially confirmed that the device will be launched on the 21st of this month. While other leading OEMs like LG Electronics and HTC are also believed to be working on their 2016 flagships, they have already rolled out Android 6.0 to a number of their handsets, so Galaxy S6 Edge and S6 Edge+ owners will now be relieved to see the latest version of Android beginning to roll out to their devices.
