Xiaomi Mi 5 has been announced earlier today. Xiaomi has held an event both in China and Barcelona, and has introduced their newest flagship. The company has also announced the Mi 4S smartphone alongside the Mi 5, but the company’s flagship definitely took the spotlight this time around. We’ve already covered the announcement of this smartphone, and have taken a closer look at its specifications, well… let’s check out Xiaomi Mi 5’s ‘special features’, parts of the device that make it stand out from the crowd in a way, read on.
Now, first and foremost, let’s talk about the phone’s build. The Xiaomi Mi 5 sports ceramic + glass build, which makes it not only feel premium, but it also looks quite nice because of it. The phone is fueled by the Snapdragon 820 SoC, which makes it one of the few devices out there that sport Qualcomm’s latest processor. This is a quad-core 64-bit SoC which is, next to the Exynos 8890, one of the most powerful processors out there. This SoC ships with an Adreno 530 GPU for graphics, and managed to crush it when it comes to benchmarks, but it remains to be seen what will it perform like in the Mi 5.
Next thing worth mentioning is the UFS 2.0 flash storage, which Xiaomi claims is 87% faster than the eMMC 5.0. This flash storage should help the device perform even better, and take full advantage of the other hardware components. Xiaomi has also included LPDDR4 RAM here, which is 100% faster than LPDDR3 RAM which is still an industry standard. Xiaomi has also opted to include the 16-megapixel 4-axis OIS camera on the back, which packs in Sony’s IMX298 sensor on the inside, which is a very capable shooter if used properly. The 4-axis OIS is supposed to function better than a regular OIS, it will allegedly stabilize the shot way better than normal OIS would. The company did show off some images during the presentation, but we’ll just have to wait and see what the camera performs after we grab a review unit. As far as the front-facing shooter goes, we’re looking at a 4-megapixel snapper, but its pixels are bigger (2um), like we’ve seen in a number of other phones thus far. This camera is quite capable, especially considering you’ll use it for selfies, don’t expect miracles though, this is just a front-facing camera after all.
The Xiaomi Mi 5 is a very well-specced device, and it also ships with Android 6.0 Marshmallow, but Xiaomi’s MIUI 7 OS is installed on top of it, so we’ll see what we’ll get in the end. Now, the infrared port is yet another thing worth mentioning, though it’s possible you really don’t use it all that much, but it can come in handy, and is nice of Xiaomi to include it here.
