Motorola seems to have started the Marshmallow update process for its 2nd-Gen Moto G (2014 Edition) smartphone across the globe. Earlier in the day, it was the turn for users in India to get the much-awaited update on their devices, and now, by the looks of it, the update may already have gone live for US residents, if a post on Reddit is to be believed. The device was launched by the Lenovo-owned company with KitKat originally, but had since got the Lollipop update last year.
The post on Reddit states the new software is being rolled out to all variants of the device across the US, which includes devices with model numbers XT1063, XT1064, XT1068 and XT1069. As is to be expected, the update is being rolled out in batches, so it might be a while before all second-gen Moto G handsets across the length and breadth of the country get their notifications. Users however, will be able to manually check whether or not the new software is available for their smartphones by going over to Settings > About > Update. One thing to note is that the update is only available for devices running the stock Motorola ROM, so those with custom ROMs might have to flash the stock Android 5.0.2 Lollipop ROM back to get the latest update to install on their smartphones.
As far as the update is concerned, the roll out isn’t at all a surprise, seeing as the Marshmallow ROM for this particular device was being soak tested for the last couple of weeks. However, those running the stock Marshmallow soak build MPB24.65-24/34 will reportedly not be getting any new software, as that particular build is precisely what’s being rolled out right now as part of the OTA update. Motorola has been fairly proactive in updating a lot of its latest smartphones to Marshmallow in recent times, having rolled out the latest and greatest version of Android to a bunch of its new handsets, including the Moto X Style, Moto X Play and also the Moto G 2015, which is actually the successor of the device that has now reportedly started getting the Marshmallow treatment.
