A couple of weeks ago, NVIDIA had announced and then begun rolling out their Android 6.0 Marshmallow update to the original NVIDIA SHIELD tablet. After hearing reports from a few readers – NVIDIA likely heard a lot more than us – about issues after the update, NVIDIA opted to put the update on hold and fix a few things. One of the bigger issues with the update was WiFi not working properly. Two weeks after the update was put on hold, it’s now rolling out once again. Which NVIDIA says that the WiFi is indeed working this time around. On NVIDIA’s forum, a rep for the company stated that “we’re confident we have corrected the problem and are releasing a new Software Update.”
NVIDIA has been sticking to mostly a stock Android experience, and that’s what you can expect to see in this update. Mostly an AOSP update to the tablet. Some of the features included in Marshmallow include Now on Tap as well as Doze. When it comes to tablets, Doze is definitely a game-changer as it extends your standby battery life on the tablet, allowing it to last that much longer. Actually, it lasts a whole lot longer. Some reports showed that the Nexus 9 lasted almost twice as long with Doze enabled in Marshmallow. Now on Tap, which is the other headlining feature in Marshmallow, allows you to use Google Now for information without leaving the app you’re currently in. It’s great for checking out the information on an email with shipping information. You can see where the package is without going to the carrier’s website or leaving your email.
For those of you with the original NVIDIA SHIELD tablet, the update is rolling out now and you should be able to go to Settings then tap on About Tablet and System Updates then tap on “Check for Updates”. If it’s not yet available for you, then it should be very soon. We don’t yet have a link to manually download or install the update, but we should pretty soon. Hopefully NVIDIA SHIELD Tablet users don’t run into any more issues with this update.
