Samsung has, historically, been pretty slow in bringing the slew of new emoji that have been coming out lately to its users. While users of most Android and iOS devices have had some of the more out-there new emoji for months, such as the taco and middle finger, Samsung users will be getting them in the Samsung Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge, as well as TouchWiz devices receiving the Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow update, such as the Galaxy Note 5 and Galaxy S6. There is one feature sorely lacking, however; racially diverse emoji. Aside from stock Android and Facebook, most emoji groups can be modified for racial diversity, allowing users to change the skin color. With Samsung’s new emoji, everybody is white aside from a police officer and a dancer, including a man wearing a turban. In Google’s emoji group and a few others, there are no actual human emoji, which eliminates the need for racially diverse options; everybody is a yellow blob.
The new emoji coming down the pipeline number quite high, easily breaking the 100 mark. Some of the new emoji include the sign of the horns, or “rock on”, as well as the aforementioned middle finger. New objects are out with this release as well, including paintings, a desktop computer, fine art and a shield. New foods include the hot dog, cheese wedge and popcorn, among others. New activities are also on deck to cater to just about every mainstream leisure activity from cricket to video games.
No specific timeline for the new emoji to roll out to existing devices was announced, though it can be assumed that devices not already sporting Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow will be getting them with their update. The Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge will have the new sets of emoji at launch. While some of the emoji are older and have been approved by the unicode standard for some time, most of the ones in this update are fairly new.
