With Mobile World Congress (MWC) just around the corner, Samsung decided to produce a minute and a half video on their innovations, called “Unpacking History.” It starts showing how its first mobile device came into existence and works its way to its dual-curved display on its Galaxy S6 Edge, which then conveniently finds its way into a Samsung Gear VR and leaves us wondering what their newest innovation will be at MWC. Even though the video covers about two decades in only 90 seconds, we are shown many devices and accomplishments. Samsung ends the video with the words, “Who knows where progress will take us,” and you can be sure this is headed directly towards MWC and the announcement of the new Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge.
The video starts with the large cellphone and always present antenna, then it is opened up to show a smaller phone and that in turn is opened up to show an even smaller flip phone. It then moves into the office where a group of engineers are working on the “World’s First Watch Phone,” or the precursor to the modern day smartwatches. After many tries, they have a working model that looks like a Taser attached to your wrist. Next they move on to the “World’s Smallest TV Phone” and then move on to Samsung’s first MP3 phone. One of the coolest transformations is when they show a Galaxy S phone and then puts it on a table and it sinks into the liquefied display of a Galaxy Note. Next, they show a climbing party making the “First 3G Call From Everest” on a Samsung and then dropping a Galaxy S5 into water, pulling it out, wiping it off and going on their merry way…you may recall the Galaxy S5 was water resistant, as is the rumored Galaxy S7. The video then moves on to the smartwatches, the Gear S2 and a room full of people exercising and checking stats with its rotating bezel. Finally, they bring out the Galaxy S6 Edge as “The First Dual Edge Display” and then they flip it over and drop it into a Gear VR and gaze at the stars, asking “Who knows where progress will take us?”
