At a time when encryption is such a hot topic, it is probably not that surprising that apps like Telegram are doing so well. For those unfamiliar with Telegram, this is an app which offers a more secure level of communication. An app which places a clear emphasis on speed and security and this is likely why the developers behind the app recently confirmed that the app is now used by 100 million users each month. Another reason for its popularity is the speed and frequency at which the app receives updates. In fact, this week it has seen another update rolling out.
This update brings with it a few notable features, with the big one being specifically designed for those times when you want to send a message to a channel but are concerned about notifying all the members of the channel or waking them up. The new feature, dubbed ‘Silent Messages’, means you can still send out the message when you want, but not have to worry about the alerts coming through. To send a silent message, simply hit the bell icon which appears in the message input field. Likewise, hit the bell icon again to turn off the silent mode.
The other features on offer bring degrees of improved functionality to the app. So for instance, you can now add signatures to channel messages so that everyone knows who sent which message. In addition, a Quick Share menu has now been included to allow users to quickly copy links which are sent as individual messages. Once copied, you can then send them on as and how you see fit, including to places outside of Telegram. Another newly added feature is the ability to be able to edit a message after it has been posted. To do so, simply tap the posted message and then click on “Edit”. The developers also note that this is a feature that works both with channels and with supergroups. Last but not least, you can now preview stickers anywhere inside the app. Simply tap and hold on the sticker to see it pop out in preview mode. In terms of the update, it does seem to already be live on the Play Store and therefore, most devices will likely have already received the update.
