March has proven to be a busy month for the world of Android, and we’re barely halfway through the month! We’ve seen Google announce the next version of Android, Android N, and we also saw Samsung officially launch two of the most anticipated devices of the year, the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge. While the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge are pretty decent devices on their own, there will always be people that want to make the most of the hardware, and when talking about Samsung devices, it’s often TouchWiz, and Samsung’s arguably pushy software that people want to get rid of. Thanks to TWRP, adventurous folk are one step closer to being able to do just that.
The folks from Team Win have managed, in a pretty short amount of time, to put together versions of the now-famous TWRP Custom Recovery for the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge. It’s worth mentioning however, that this only includes those devices that are powered by an Exynos processor. These TWRP versions will not work on devices with a Snapdragon processor under-the-hood. For those wanting to double-check, Galaxy S7 models supported are the SM-G930F, SM-G930FD, SM-G930X and SM-G930W8. Meanwhile, Galaxy S7 Edge models supported are the SM-G935F, SM-G935FD, SM-G935X and SM-G935W8.
Those looking to get TWRP on their Galaxy S7 or Galaxy S7 Edge should take a look at the TWRP website. Each listing for each phone has links to a helpful XDA-Developers thread and it appears as though these custom recoveries are already pretty stable. There’s some interesting talk about the bootloader running on these two devices, but having a custom recovery is a big step to getting custom ROMs as well as mods onto these new devices. Over time, we’re likely to see more of this sort of thing for the Galaxy S7, but it does take time for custom ROMs and such to arrive for devices like these. One thing that is for sure however, there shouldn’t be any shortage of users out there that are willing to try out new things which means there’s definitely going to be a platform for lots and lots development in the future.
