Samsung really did a great job with turning its Smart Switch app into one of the best free solutions for transferring all types of content from your old device to a new one. The Smart Switch is easy to use and works quickly and reliably with pretty much all of Samsung’s smartphones released in recent years. Naturally, its two latest flagship devices – the Samsung Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge – also support Smart Switch, but better yet, they come with the utility pre-installed. Smart Switch is technically no more available to install and use as an app on your latest and greatest Samsung phone, but has instead been turned into a built-in feature of the device’s OS. Even the Play Store description of Smart Switch states that the app is incompatible with both the S7 and S7 Edge because it comes pre-loaded on both devices.
So, where’s it hidden when it’s obviously not in the app drawer of your device? The answer is actually rather logical: Smart Switch’s new location is the ‘Backup and reset’ menu of the S7 and S7 Edge general settings tab. Given how the Play Store version of the app isn’t designed with the two latest additions to the Galaxy S series of smartphones in mind, you’ll have to use the Galaxy App store in order to update your Smart Switch if you own either device. At least, that’s where things stand as of right now. There are some indications that Samsung will publish an S7 and S7 Edge version of the app on the Play Store in the future, but that’s yet to be confirmed.
After launching in April of last year, the Smart Switch quickly became one of the go-to methods of backup and restore for many owners of Samsung smartphones and tablets. The South Korean consumer electronics manufacturer also seems pretty satisfied with the app, at least judging by the fact that it’s now integrating it even further into the OS of its latest devices. Though many of the last year’s Samsung models got (or are in the process of getting) their very own Android 6.0 Marshmallow upgrade, they won’t be affected by this change, i.e. their version of Smart Switch will still behave as an independent Play Store app.
