Rogers acquired Mobilicity last year, but during that past year have done little to bring their users into the Rogers ‘fold.’ Rogers made a statement at the time – “Currently, Mobilicity customers are running on the existing Mobilicity towers/network. As we roll out the red carpet to welcome them to Rogers, we will switch Mobilicity sites over to the Rogers network, further improving our network and giving customers even greater access to fast, reliable service. All Mobilicity plans are being honored.”
Mobilicity’s 3G service is not compatible with Rogers’ or their sub-brand, Fido. Eventually, Rogers will take over Mobilicity’s network and have their customers join their 4G LTE network. In the meantime, Rogers has offer substantial discounts to Mobilicity’s customers to purchase a new mobile phone compatible with Rogers’ network, but many customers have been slow to respond nor do they want to spend the extra money. However, it looks as though Mobilicity may be forcing their old customers, which numbered 150,000 at one time, by giving them a ‘nudge’ in the right direction as they revamped their plan rates, put limits on data speed and reducing the roaming allotment.
It was just last week that Fido started texting Mobilicity customers urging them to make the switch as the supply of Mobilicity’s devices starts to dwindle. With Rogers offering them discounts to switch and Fido offering them deals, this may be the best time to purchase a new mobile phone. The text message read – “Mobilicity msg: Our friends at Fido have a great deal we think you may be interested in based on your current plan. Get $5 off your monthly service fee for 9 months on any Fido plan with invoice starting at $25/month. Plus get a great smartphone starting at $0 with a 2-year agreement on select plans. Visit a Fido store to make the switch today. Offer ends Mar 31 2016. Reply STOP to opt out.” Mobilicity got rid of its $55 a month plan, so the available options are $25, $35 and $45, but changes were made to lower services. For the most part, the $25 plan stayed the same, however, the $35 plan gets rid of Canada-wide calling and global text, but keeps the unlimited Province calling, North American text and unlimited data, although data speeds capped after 2GB. The $45 plan stays close to the original, but caps data speeds after 6GB and reduces North American Voice Roaming from 60 minutes to 30 minutes.
