Report: Xiaomi Prepared 4 Million Mi 5 Units Prior To Release

Xiaomi Mi 5 has been announced during the Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona, and the company has also held and event in Beijing that very same day. The Mi 5 is Xiaomi’s long awaited flagship, its predecessor was announced back in July 2014, so you can imagine how long have XIaomi consumers been waiting for the Mi 5. Xiaomi was expecting high demand for the Mi 5, but it seems like the demand exceeded their expectations, read on.

We’ve reported yesterday that 16.8 million people registered for the first Xiaomi Mi 5 flash sale which was held in China yesterday. The phone was out of stock in only a few minutes, and we initially thought that Xiaomi did not prepare a lot of units for this flash sale, only a couple of hundred thousand units, but it seems like the company actually sold quite a bit of Mi 5 handsets yesterday. According to Taiwanese media, Xiaomi has actually prepared 4 million Mi 5 smartphones for initial sales, and the vast majority was sold yesterday it seems. Pre-release reports have been suggesting that Xiaomi has been working hard in order to secure plenty of units for the launch, which they sure did if this report is accurate. Still, this is not nearly enough, almost 17 million people wanted to get their hands on the Mi 5 yesterday, so chances are Xiaomi would sell out 4 times as much Mi 5 handsets if they managed to make that much. Xiaomi has actually asked Foxconn and Inventec to pitch in when it comes to manufacturing the Mi 5 in order for them to meet the demand, which is not surprising considering how many people are trying to get their hands on the Mi 5. It will surely going to be interesting to see how many Mi 5 units will Xiaomi be able to sell before the end of 2016, but one thing is for sure, this handset will considerably contribute to Xiaomi’s overall sales numbers.

The Xiaomi Mi 5 features a 5.15-inch fullHD display, 3GB / 4GB of RAM and 32GB / 64GB / 128GB of internal storage. The Snapdragon 820 SoC fuels this handset, and a 16-megapixel 4-axis OIS camera is available on the back of the Mi 5. Android 6.0 Marshmallow comes pre-installed on this device, and on top of it, you’ll find Xiaomi’s MIUI 7 OS. That being said, keep in mind that Xiaomi was selling the regular Mi 5 variant yesterday, the one with 3GB of RAM and 32GB / 64GB of internal storage. We still don’t know when will the Mi 5 Pro going to become available, but we’ll keep you in the loop.
