Apps and games focused on kids are not exactly scarce, as there are tons of them available in the Play Store. Video streaming apps dedicated completely to kids content however are fewer. Google launched YouTube Kids near the beginning of last year which offers up tons of kids shows all in a friendly and accessible user interface. Netflix also has their own format for kids as you can switch over the app to a kids-only mode. Now Sky, a leading entertainment company in Europe, has just launched Sky Kids on the Play Store with thousands of episode of some of the most popular kids shows around.
The app which just launched today, only seems to be available for certain types of devices, tablets specifically, and may only be available in specific regions like the UK and Europe. Although the Play Store will generally tell you that an app is not available in your country if it’s region locked, and this wasn’t the case when trying to install it to the Shield K1 here in the U.S., this doesn’t mean that it is available here as it seems to be restricted to European countries, which ones specifically is unclear. Nevertheless, this is an app which won’t be available for smartphones, at least not for now, so you’ll want to have a tablet on hand if you want your kids to have something to watch on the go.
If you already have a tablet that appears to be compatible, you can download and install Sky Kids for free, although it does appear that you will need to be a Sky customer if you want to be able to browse content for free. Sky doesn’t mention if the app can be accessed in supported regions without being a Sky customer for a monthly streaming fee, but chances are that you will need to be a subscriber of Sky’s normal TV services. Once you’re in the app, you’ll find content like Octonauts, Pepe Pig, Nick Jr’s Paw Patrol and more. Alongside having loads of kids content available, the app interface is evenfriendly and inviting for kids similar to the new layout for the Netflix Kids Mode, with a white backdrop and plenty of colorful icons for each show.
