Automate your Google OnHub Router with IFTTT

IFTTT which stands for If This Then That, is a great tool for automating all sorts of things. You can set it up to automate the internet for you. By doing things like having it automatically post on Twitter when you post an Instagram photo. Or sending your phone a notification in the morning with the weather. But there’s much more that you can do when it comes to home automation. IFTTT already has support for Belkin’s WeMo, Amazon’s Alexa and Philips HUE, and now the Google OnHub Router joins the mix.

With IFTTT you can do things like receiving a Gmail message when a new device connects to your network. Definitely useful for those neighbors that like to piggyback off of your internet. As you’ll know pretty quickly when they’ve connected, and can boot them off of your network. You can also choose to have IFTTT know when you unplug your phone and have the OnHub give it priority on WiFi. That way you get the fastest WiFi service available on your network. You can also set a recipe to prioritize a device from your Android Wear smartwatch. And that’s really just the tip of the iceberg. There are so many things that you can do with IFTTT and your OnHub now, but those are some of the pre-made recipes available on IFTTT. The possibilities here are endless, especially since IFTTT has over 100 channels that can be connected. One of the cooler things is that you can turn on your Philips HUE lights when a device connects to your network.

The Google OnHub is a router that Google created with ASUS and TP-Link, both of which are very popular in terms of routers. Google built the OnHub to be ready for the Internet of Things. With us connecting more and more products to our WiFi network, we need a way to hold all of those products on the network without killing the speed of our WiFi. Which is what typically happens as more things connect to one network – one reason why Verizon is having trouble with speeds on their 4G LTE network these days. You can pick up the OnHub over at Amazon right now.
