As the wearables market continues to expand, more and more products are finding their way into the space that is mostly dominated by fitness trackers at the moment. Although fitness trackers are likely to remain the biggest chunk of wearables products for the foreseeable future, other items such as smart cordless earbuds like the Bragi Dash are now available to consumers. As smart wireless earbuds go, there aren’t that many that are currently on the market, but Samsung looks to be attacking that issue head on by preparing to launch a product called the Geat IconX which is their own pair of cordless earbuds.
Although there isn’t much known about the Gear IconX currently, they at the very least appear to be on par with what’s offered by Bragi in the design department, as they visually resemble the makeup of the Dash and other offerings like Onkyo’s True wireless earphones that were shown off at IFA in Berlin last year. Both earbuds of the Gear IconX are designed to fit specifically in either the left or the right ear, with a set of gold charging contact pins that connect to the charging dock which also doubles as a carrying case for the earbuds when they’re not in use. Samsung has also fitted each earbud with an ear tensioner that would help to keep the earbud securely in place during wear. They’re also reported to have 4GB of flash memory on board for storing music for those who wish to use the earbuds as their digital music player during exercise, and they’re dust and water resistant so they can be worn and used without worrying that they’ll be damaged by sweat or rain.
Alongside the Gear IconX Samsung has also shown off their follow-up to the Gear Fit from 2014, appropriately named the Gear Fit 2. The Gear Fit 2 is said to have a display that will be more curved than the original Gear Fit and it should carry the same Super AMOLED display panel technology as well. It also appears to have a latch on either side of the main tracker unit for an easy detachment of the band, potentially to make it easy to swap out and change at the user’s discretion, and this time around Samsung is said to have integrated GPS into the unit. Currently there is no detailed information about pricing or availability.
