Samsung and Apple are the two largest smartphone brands in the world. These two companies have been occupying top two spots for a while now, and Huawei has actually managed to take the third place last year. That being said, Lenovo and Xiaomi has been placed below Huawei on that list, but it seems like things have changed, at least according to the newest report from IDC, let’s see what’s new, shall we.
According to IDC’s info, which we’ve already talked about recently, Samsung and Apple are still far ahead of the competition. Samsung has managed to ship 81.9 million devices in the first quarter of this year, and it is followed by Apple with around 50 million shipped units. Apple is actually seeing a significant decline in shipments compared to last year, as they managed to ship 16.3% less smartphones. Huawei, on the other hand, shipped 27.5 million units, and compared to last year, the company has managed to ship 58.4% more devices this time around. That being said, Lenovo and Xiaomi are not on the top 5 list any longer, the two companies have been replaced by Oppo and Vivo, which might be surprising to some of you. Oppo, a company which has managed to ship 50 million smartphones last year, has actually sold 14.3 million units in the first quarter of this year, which is 153.2% more than they were able to do in the same period last year. Vivo, on the other hand, sold 14.3 million devices, which is also a significant increase compared to last year, a 123.8% increase, to be accurate.
Both Oppo and Vivo are selling tons of smartphones through offline stores, unlike Xiaomi, which is focused on online sales. Sales in India surely helped Oppo sell so many devices thus far, but the company’s main focus is still China, and for those of you who don’t know, both Oppo and Vivo are quite popular in their homeland, and are considered to be premium brands. It will surely going to be interesting to see what happens before the end of the year, but Lenovo and Xiaomi are really going to need to step up in order to compete with the likes of Oppo and Vivo.
