Since its launch in 2015, the Samsung Gear S2 has been pretty well-received by both the consumers and critics, and the South Korean consumer electronics manufacturer is claiming that its latest smartwatch will continue to impress for quite some time. In an interview published earlier today, the company’s Vice President of the User Experience Design Team, Yoojin Hong, stated that the Gear S2 is an evolving wearable that is constantly changing in order to meet the also changing and growing needs of its users.
Hong also stressed the fact that Samsung is one of the few manufacturers of wearables capable of internally designing and manufacturing each and every component of its products which results in gadgets which offer a unique user experience specifically crafted for Samsung’s customers. After a couple of major software updates, Gear 2 users now have access to features such as adaptive display brightness and flight mode, and Hong claims that’s only the beginning of what’s to come for the Tizen-powered wearable. She continued by explaining how Samsung’s user experience designers constantly have an extremely difficult job on their hands as the South Korean company insists that “user experience cannot be in beta”. When an update for the Gear S2 rolls out, it is imperative that it’s a complete and finished product which is obviously not an easy thing to constantly deliver. However, they manage and Hong is convinced that they’ll keep managing to do exactly that. “We are not afraid to change, and can move forward at the speed of technology once the strategy is set,” she explained.
Among other things, Samsung’s VP of the User Experience Design Team also revealed that they didn’t approach the Gear S2 as a smart device, but just an “everyday casual watch” that happened to become smart. She illustrated that point by explaining how the team decided to use a traditional rotating bezel for navigation instead of a touch screen because it was adamant at creating a watch and not “a mini-smartphone for the wrist.” Make sure to check the original interview with Hong linked below if you’re interested in more details on Samsung’s design decisions related to the Gear S2 smartwatch, as well as company’s future plans for the popular Tizen-powered wearable.
