Yes that’s right, we’ve got the final consumer model of the HTC Vive in house and are unboxing it for you today! This is a rather large box, some may even consider it huge, but that’s because everything you could think of is inside this box. It’s not just the headset and a controller, or a small head tracker that sits in front of your monitor, it’s a full room setup that allows you to move in the virtual space the way you would in real life. HTC’s version of VR is certainly the most full experience you’ll get out there, but it’s also the most expensive because of it. At the retail price of $799.99, this is not a cheap product, but that also means the experience doesn’t feel cheap either.
We’ve had a couple of hands on opportunities with the HTC Vive in the past, the first with the initial development kit back in September of last year, and most recently at CES in Las Vegas in January with the HTV Vive Pre development unit. Both of these experiences were similar to what’s coming out of the box in the final consumer model, although just like the Vive Pre from January this one features a streamlined, lighter design, and of course that camera on the front of the visor.
