Qualcomm Announces new Wearable SoC, Snapdragon Wear 1100

At Computex in Taiwan, Qualcomm has announced their second processor that is aimed at the every-growing wearable industry. The Snapdragon Wear 2100 was announced this past February, and now Qualcomm is adding another model to the Snapdragon Wear family in the 1100 processor. The Snapdragon Wear 1100 is designed for wearables like kids smartwatches, fitness trackers, smart headsets and wearable accessories.

This new processor excels in meeting requirements of low power features like Power Save mode, as well as industry leading compact packages, as well as next generation Cat 1 modem for LTE and 3G global band support. The Snapdragon Wear 1100 is a smaller processor, which makes it great for working well in smaller wearables as well as giving them better battery life.  This new system on a chip or SoC also features an integrated applications processor that is used for Linux-based applications and it scales to support voice, WiFi and Bluetooth. This allows the Snapdragon Wear 1100 to provide a seamless connected experience for all. It also includes the Qualcomm iZat integrated location engine, which will offer enhanced accuracy and power optimization. The Snapdragon Wear 1100 chipset is already available and is shipping to partners right now.

Qualcomm Technologies’ senior vice president and general manager of IoT, Anthony Murry said in a prepared statement that the company is “excited to have established a technology leadership position in the highly innovative wearables ecosystem, where the breadth of products and our connectivity, location and compute solutions bring differentiation to our customers.”

During Computex, there will be a few announcements of wearables running new Snapdragon Wear chipsets. Including Anda Technologies, who will be announcing a kids watch, that is destined for Latin America. This smartwatch will be running on the Snapdragon Wear 2100 processor, and is also based on Android. inWatch is also announcing two kids watches. They have one for boys and one for girls, that will be sold in China. This one also runs on the Qualcomm Snapdragon Wear 2100 processor. Finally, we have WeBandz. They will be showing off a smart tracking modular device, which can be customized for kids, the elderly or pets. And it’ll be coming to the US. Qualcomm says that there are about 45 products on the way with these new Snapdragon Wear processors. Not all of these will be available globally, as you can see with Anda Technologies, inWatch and WeBandz. But they should make for some pretty exciting products.
