With the Xperia Z line failing to capture the imagination of smartphone buyers around the world, Sony has decided to change things around with the announcement of three Xperia X series handsets earlier this year at the Mobile World Congress trade show in Barcelona, Spain. The Xperia X, Xperia XA and Xperia X Performance all have fairly similar design cues on the outside, but differ significantly in terms of the hardware components on the inside. Sony also added another device to the line recently by listing the Xperia XA Ultra on its global website, so the Xperia X-series now has at least four different models as part of its 2016 lineup.
While Sony has started taking pre-orders for some of these devices in many regions around the world over the past few weeks, India was one of the major markets conspicuous by its absence from that list. Now, however, the Japanese consumer electronics giant is looking to rectify that anomaly by officially announcing the launch of two of these devices in India through a listing on its India-specific website, where those wanting to get their hands on an Xperia X handset should be able to register themselves for the Xperia X and the Xperia XA. Pricing and availability details are yet to be clarified by the company, though, and there’s no word either about whether the Xperia X Performance will also be made available at some stage in the future.
Either way, as far as the two listed devices are concerned, the Xperia X is a mid-ranger that comes with a 5-inch 1080p display, a Snapdragon 650 SoC, 3 GB of RAM, 32 GB of internal storage and a 2,620 mAh battery. The handset also sports a 23-megapixel rear-facing camera with a Sony Exmor RS sensor, and a 13-megapixel front-facing camera to shoot selfies with. Meanwhile, the Xperia XA sports more humble entry-level hardware, including a 5-inch 720p display, a MediaTek Helio P10 SoC, 2 GB of RAM, 16 GB of built-in storage and a 2,300 mAh battery. The cameras are also an apparent downgrade from the higher-spec model, with a 13-megapixel primary shooter on the rear and an 8-megapixel selfie snapper up front.
