Leak: Moto Z Style Mod Surfaces Ahead of Announcement

Lenovo is holding an event next week, and we expect to see the Moto Z (renamed from the Moto X) announced at this event in San Francisco. Lately, we’ve been seeing a good bit of leaks coming out about the upcoming Moto Z. We know that it is going to be modular – although not as modular as Project Ara will be. And we have also seen some of these modules appear already. Now, it looks like we’re getting treated to a leak of their “Style Mod”, which appears to be available in the traditional Moto X colors and materials. According to the picture above, it looks like we’re getting wood, leather and a stitched material, perhaps ballistic nylon which they used on the Droid Turbo in 2014.

You can also tell from the pictures, that the camera bump goes away, when you add on these Style Mods. Which is a good thing for a lot of people. Some may also be wondering about the “speaker holes” that were on the back of the device, well as we thought, they appear to be pogo pin connectors and are what connect to these MotoMods. Slapping on one of these MotoMods makes the back look nice and clean. Apparently, the Motorola logo has been blurred out here, but of course that will be on the final version when we see it next week.

The Moto Z is expected to come in two variants, a Moto Z Play and a Moto Z Style. This time around, they both are supposedly sporting 5.5-inch displays, with the Moto Z Style having the higher-end set of specs. Including the Snapdragon 820, 3GB or 4GB of RAM depending on the model you choose, along with a 13MP camera around back. Not to mention the 2600mAh battery that is powering the Moto Z Style – 3500mAh in the Moto Z Play. Specs are about what you would expect from a flagship smartphone in 2016, but the real story here is the MotoMods. Which Lenovo is supposedly going to have a slew of them available at launch, with more in the pipeline from third-party developers as well as themselves.
