Amazon already sells a slew of unlocked smartphones through their store. Including phones like the Moto G, Moto X, BLU R1 HD, ZTE Axon and many others. Amazon does typically have these phones on sale cheaper than competitors, but now they are going to be making them even cheaper. If you’re an Amazon Prime member, you’ll be able to get select unlocked Android smartphones for up to half off the regular price. For example, the BLU R1 HD is typically priced at $99, but with Amazon Prime you can get it as low as $49. Another example is the Moto G4 which is normally priced at $199, Amazon Prime members can get it for just $149, that’s $50 off of the regular price.
There’s always a catch though, and there is one here with these unlocked smartphones. Amazon is offering up these discounts on their unlocked smartphones in return for posting ads on your lockscreen. While no one will be a fan of seeing ads on their lockscreen, you can easily swipe them away, or tap on them if it’s an offer or ad that you are actually interested in. This is similar to the ads that Amazon has put on their own Fire tablets, that allow them to offer the tablets even cheaper. It’s important to note that currently, this promotion is only for the BLU R1 HD and the Moto G4. The Moto G4 isn’t actually available just yet, but it will be in a few weeks – slated to launch on July 12th in the US.
It may not be the best way to get a decent discount on a new smartphone, but it is a pretty interesting business model. If you aren’t an Amazon Prime member already, you can sign up for a free 30-day trial. This promotion is just the latest in a long list of features that Amazon Prime users get, for a low price of just $99 per year. If you’re a student, you can get it as low as $49 per year. Of course, the big feature of Amazon Prime is getting the free two-day shipping, and even next-day shipping for a small fee.
