Google’s Pixel line of products was once restricted to just a couple of Chrome OS laptops which included the first and second generation Pixel Chromebooks, and last year Google announced and launched the Pixel C tablet running Android. While speculation has arisen before about Google potentially looking at a Pixel smartphone, it seems the next Pixel device in the series of products may be a new Chromebook Pixel. A new job listing over at the Google careers page reveals that the Search giant is seeking a Quality Engineer for the Chromebook Pixel.
While this on its own does not necessarily mean that Google is working on a new Pixel laptop, Google specifically notes that they are looking for someone who will be a part of “shaping Google’s next game changer,” which certainly suggests that Google is preparing to start development on a new Chromebook Pixel to replace the 2015 model. Earlier this year, Google stopped selling the $999 model of the Chromebook Pixel which came with only 8GB of RAM, leaving consumers with only one option in the 16GB RAM model for $1,299. With the removal of one price point for the 2015 model of the Chromebook Pixel, it’s possible that Google is preparing to make room for the next Chromebook Pixel in the lineup.
The job description doesn’t give any details on a new product other than the statement about shaping their next game changer, so there is no way of knowing what exactly the device will look like or what sort of hardware specifications Google would have planned for it, considering there is a third Chromebook Pixel in the works in the first place. It’s worth mentioning that the Engineer who gets hired for this position would be part of the manufacturing and supply chain, which sounds like they would be working directly with the hardware of this new device, suggesting they’ll have influence on the outcome of the potential design and other elements of the finished product. Without much more to go on other than the key pieces of information found on the job page, it’s unclear what Google might charge for a new Pixel Chromebook, but given the high price of the last two models, it would likely be just as expensive.
