When Sony officially announced their PlayStation Vue application for the PS4 and PS3 consoles, for the U.S. it was only available in select areas. A small handful of cities that left out a fairly large portion of the country’s population and a large chunk of Sony’s console owners. Eventually Sony began to roll the app out to more areas around the U.S. and it’s now available nationwide for the most part. Sony also launched the app on mobile devices some time ago, although only on iOS. Last week, Sony mentioned that the Android version of the PlayStation Vue Mobile app which was promised to users of the platform, would finally be dropping this week, and as of today Sony has made good on that promise and has launched the app in the Play Store.
PlayStation Vue is Sony’s premium TV service, which not only offers on demand content from a large selection of shows, including from premium channels like SHOWTIME, but it also offers live TV services, basically giving consumers another option for live TV as opposed to cable TV services from their local provider. They currently offer three different packages, all with their own pricing tiers, and with varying channels offered.
At the moment, it doesn’t seem that Sony is allowing you to set up a brand new PlayStation Vue account through the application, which is a rather odd move, so if you’re looking to give this a shot you’ll either have to set it up on one of the compatible consoles where the app is available, or through the PlayStation Vue website. Once you have the account created and you have your package selected, the app will allow you to log in and you’ll see all your channels available, as well as favorites lists and what’s currently airing live on the channels you have at your disposal. The app also comes along with Chromecast support, so if you’re wanting to watch at home on the big screen, you can simply stream it to the TV or monitor you have the Chromecast plugged into. The app is free to download, of course, and Sony does allow a free trial of the service package you choose upon first time setup.
