Among the handful of options that are out there these days for streaming TV shows, PlayStation Vue is one which has yet to come to Android. Recently launched in many more regions through the PlayStation 4 and other currently supported devices, the TV service was launched on the iOS platforms already as of last year, and back in November Sony announced that Chromecast support for the app would be made available in the near future. While the Chromecast support did launch in December of last year, it was only for the iOS app. Android users are about to get their chance to test out the service though if they don’t own another compatible device with which to run it, as Sony has announced on their PlayStation blog today that Android support comes next week for smartphones and tablets, and the app will allow streaming to Chromecast.
While Sony has not given a hard date for the Android app launch, next week is not too far off so it won’t be a long wait, and with a general time frame now having been listed, those who are interested in checking the service out will be able to stop wondering. Sony notes that you will be able to sign up for a PlayStation Vue service account either through the PlayStation Vue website, or through the PS4 and PS3 consoles if they have one.
PlayStation Vue should be available in most cities around the U.S. now, and the service offers various packages that each include different levels of channel availability. Packages begin at $29.99 a month for the Access option, which gives you more than 55 channels for viewing, while the next step up is the Core option for $34.99 a month, giving you access to more than 70 channels for viewing (including all channels from the Access option). Lastly there’s the Elite option which gives you more than 100 channels for viewing. All packages include a combination of live cable TV, movie, and sports channels, but the Core and Elite options also add national live TV and sports networks, while Elite also adds top movie and entertainment channels. To use the Android app once it launches, you’ll need a device running Android 4.4 or above. Sony explains that the app will also support other Google Cast-enabled devices, so if you have a TV with Google Cast built-in you’ll be able to stream to it.
