The last year or so has seen a number of more novel smartphones coming through. These have included some which place an emphasis on varying degrees of being modular, like the LG G5 and the Moto Z and those which look to stand out for other reasons like emphasizing the cloud (with the Nextbit Robin) or making use of Tango functionality like with the Lenovo PHAB2 Pro. However, one particular device which was heavily reported on during its initial announcement phase was the Turing Phone. This was a phone which was said to be built of liquidmorphium and comes with an “unhackable” level of security. That said, the Turing Phone has taken its time in making its way to consumers who had pre-ordered and even saw its OS being swapped from Android to Sailfish OS along the way.
The latest on the Turing Phone is now coming from an email which seems to be in the process of being sent out to those who had pre-ordered the handset and makes for some interesting reading. According to the email, the Turing Phone will begin shipping to backers on July 12th. However, the phone which is being sent out will be an “evaluation” model.
Due to the length of time in which it has taken the Turing Phone to arrive, much of the specs that were originally intended have become somewhat dated. Like for instance, the Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 processor which is said to be included. Therefore, this is the assumption as to why the phone is now being shipped is an ‘evaluation’ edition, as it presumably is designed to include the original specs and put something in the hands of backers so that they can at least be using the phone they ordered. This also seems to be why the email details that by the end of this year a more up-to-date version of the Turing Phone will make its way to the same backers and free of charge. The updated version will be one which is listed to come boasting the latest Qualcomm processor, the Snapdragon 820.
