While Yahoo might be going through a messy selling-off of its assets after a long recovery that hasn’t gone quite to plan, that doesn’t mean the brand is far from done with. For the past few years now, Yahoo has tried their best to deliver some great mobile apps, including the gorgeous Yahoo Weather, the informative Yahoo News Digest and of course, the Yahoo Sports app. The app stable for Yahoo has become a strong one, with the purchase of Aviate practically giving Google’s once-rival on the web a way to compete on Android, too. Speaking of the Yahoo Sports app, it’s one of the more popular apps that users use to keep up-to-date with the latest developments in the World of Sports with over 5 Million downloads. Well, that was until today, as they’ve removed the old Sports app from the Play Store to replace it with a completely new one.
This new Yahoo Sports app has a new look and feel which centers around a new Material Design look and feel, eschewing the classic purple icon and dark theme for something that appears to be altogether more classy. Included in this new release is also a new home screen, which Yahoo is simply calling “favorites”. Here, users will be able to choose their favorite teams across all sports and see their updates in real time. The idea here, Yahoo says is to “bring a consistent emphasis on content, communities and utility” just as they have done with other recently-updated Yahoo apps on Android and iOS. Video is taking center stage here as well, as Yahoo declare it a “big deal” for their new Sports app. In the Favoites view, users will be able to watch highlights from games and key moments there and then, without having to leave the app.
The new Yahoo Sports users Material Design in a dark blue and white color combo to deliver neat cards and straightforward menu selections. While it might come across as the most exciting new sports app in recent memory, it does a great job of making it even easier to get the information you’re looking for, when you want it.
