Chrome OS is available in a few different varieties. While laptops – also known as ‘Chromebooks’ – are the most popular way of using Chrome OS, there are also desktops that are available, as well as all-in-one’s. This all-in-one from Acer is known as the Chromebase 24. It’s a 24-inch desktop with Chrome OS built in. This means that you aren’t getting a full desktop OS, in the same sense that you would with Windows, MacOS or Linux, as Chrome OS is mostly just a web browser. Although Android apps are coming soon to Chrome OS, and they will be available on this Chromebase 24.
As far as the specs go on the Acer Chromebase 24, we are looking at a 23.8-inch (measured diagonally) IPS display with a 1920×1080 resolution. This is not a touch screen, and it does sport a 16:9 ratio. This is powered by the Intel Celeron 3215U processor, which is clocked at 1.70GHz. It also includes integrated Intel HD Graphics, along with 4GB of RAM (2x2GB, unfortunately RAM can’t be upgraded), and a 16GB solid state drive (SSD). For connectivity, it has 3 USB 3.0 ports, and 1 USB 2.0 ports. Of course, the USB 3.0 are backwards compatible with USB 2.0 devices. There is also a webcam available, Bluetooth 4.0, WiFi 802.11 ac.
The Acer Chromebase 24 is definitely a capable machine. Coming in with 4GB of RAM, that should be plenty of RAM for Chrome OS, no matter what you are doing on the machine. While it is unfortunate that the RAM can’t be upgraded, it’s at least good that Acer did provide 4GB of RAM inside, instead of a measly two gigabytes that we’ve seen with many other Chrome OS devices out there. There are other models of the Acer Chromebase 24 available, as well as a touch screen model, if you do wish to pick one up. A touch screen Chromebase 24 would likely be better if you plan on using Android apps and/or games on the Chromebase 24. Especially since all of those apps and games were created for touch screen devices.
