Well, that was certainly quite the wait. Almost a year and a half after Samsung filed a trademark for a tablet device called the Galaxy Tab J, the South Korean consumer electronics manufacturer has finally revealed what’s hiding behind the said name. It’s an entry-level tablet currently only announced for Taiwan and specifically designed to be used along with a smartphone. The Samsung Galaxy Tab J is not to be confused with Samsung Galaxy J, by industry standards’ now prehistoric smartphone device which launched in late 2013.
The tablet itself features a SIM card slot meant to accommodate your phone’s SIM card during long journeys. So, the Galaxy Tab J basically has all functionality of an Android smartphone packed in the tablet form. It boasts a 7-inch WXGA display featuring a resolution of 1280 by 800 pixels, a yet unspecified 1.5GHz quad-core processor, 1.5GB of RAM, and 8GB of internal memory which can be expanded by an additional 200GB via the tablet’s microSD card slot. The device’s 8-megapixel rear camera features a respectable aperture of f/1.9 which means you should be able to use it to get some serviceable bokeh shots, especially for a tablet. The 2-megapixel front camera is primarily meant for video calls and users probably shouldn’t have high expectations from it. The Galaxy Tab J also features all of the expected connectivity options: there’s Wi-FI 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.0 LE, A-GPS, and FM Radios. While the device’s battery isn’t removable, it’s actually one of its strong suits as the capacity of 4,000mAh means it should keep the Galaxy Tab J powered for a respectable amount of hours. More specifically, Samsung is claiming that its latest entry-level tablet can endure nine full hours of continuous use.
As Samsung revealed during its short presentation, its latest entry-level tablet will launch with Android 5.1.1. Lollipop with the newest iteration of the company’s TouchWiz user interface (UI). The Galaxy Tab J will launch in Taiwan early next month with a recommended price tag of 599 Yuan, which amounts to around $90. The tablet will be available in gold and white colors and Samsung has yet to reveal any plans to bring it to the West, provided they exist.
