The smartphone market in China is no doubt a very competitive one, with domestic brands such as Huawei, OPPO and Xiaomi, being supported by locals, leaving very little room for international smartphone brands such as Samsung and Apple to expand in the country. Chinese smartphone brands have also managed to break into the international market, selling tens of millions of smartphones each quarter of the year, including the second quarter of the year.
Kevin Wang, an IHS analyst, recently revealed the ranking of the top Chinese smartphone manufacturers based on sales for the April-June period of the year. Firmly on top of the list sits Huawei, having sold around 32.16 million handsets during the second quarter of the year. Huawei has been making brisk sale of its flagship device, the Huawei P9 and has been running numerous marketing campaigns focusing on the camera of the device which was co-engineered with Leica. Taking the second spot is OPPO, having sold 21.90 million smartphones during the period. Just like Huawei, OPPO has launched massive marketing campaign featuring its devices, most recently the OPPO F1 Plus. The company also released a limited edition OPPO F1 Plus which featured the signatures of multiple players from Spanish football team, Barcelona. Just behind OPPO is Vivo, which managed to sell some 16.41 million phones. Coming in at fourth place is Xiaomi, or better known as the Apple of China. Xioami managed to sell 15.22 million units of its smartphones. Xiaomi is currently the number one manufacturer in China but it doesn’t have a very wide presence internationally, especially in Europe and North America.
ZTE managed to take fifth spot, having sold 13.70 million smartphones in the April-June period. This is followed by Lenovo with 11.12 million devices sold at sixth position, TCL at seventh position having sold 7.40 million units. Taking the eighth and final spot is LeEco, having sold 5.83 million smartphones during the period. As Chinese smartphone manufacturers face fierce competition from one another, this ranking might be totally different the next two quarters, especially with the launch of the Redmi Pro by Xiaomi. Huawei and OPPO are also expected to release new devices too, with Huawei expected to announce the 6.6-inch Honor Note 8 in a few days time and OPPO is rumoured to announce its OPPO F1S in August
