Summary: Huawei has filed a new patent with the CNIPA for a retractable periscope camera system. The technology would allow for the implementation of periscope cameras, taking up less internal space in smartphones. You could also gradually tweak the zoom using a rotating ring.

For years, Huawei has stood out as one of the most innovative phone brands in terms of photography. The company worked with Leica for several years to fine-tune the image quality of its smartphone cameras. Currently, it has its own imaging brand called “XMAGE,” where it continues to develop impressive technologies. Now, Huawei may be working on a retractable periscope camera system, according to a patent.

91mobiles has spotted a new Huawei patent filed with the CNIPA (China National Intellectual Property Administration). The patent describes a retractable camera system, which may sound familiar at this point. However, the Chinese giant could implement it in a sensor where it has not been implemented to date.

A potential retractable periscope camera for Huawei flagships

The periscope cameras have been one of the greatest advances in image quality and versatility in mobile photography. These systems allow for higher-quality optical zoom compared to traditional telephoto sensors. Of course, the image quality of these systems is also extremely superior to that of digital zoom.

Implementing a periscope camera involves stacking multiple lenses sequentially. A prism and a mirror bend the light to the angle necessary for the system to work. As you might imagine, similar systems take up much more space than a traditional telephoto lens. However, Huawei may have found an ingenious solution to the problem.

Huawei’s patent describes a retractable periscope camera system. This means its components would take up less internal space in the device. When you need to use the periscope, the phone enables the sensor and unfolds it via a motorized mechanism. In other words, the rear sensor will “extend” when you want to use it. The sensor will automatically return to its original position when you finish using it.

Another interesting detail is that the system would allow you to manually tweak the zoom using a rotating ring. This will offer a more comfortable and granular way to adjust the image in the viewfinder.

It’s worth noting that the Huawei Pura 70 Ultra already includes a retractable rear camera. So, Huawei already has experience working with this technology. However, no smartphone manufacturers have used a similar system for a periscope camera. It remains to be seen whether Huawei will implement this technology in a commercial product in the near future.
