The Samsung Galaxy Note 7 has long been rumored to come with an iris scanner, and while it has leaked in photos before, a video posted online at miaopai seemingly shows the iris scanner being used, making this the first live video of the iris scanner on the unannounced device in action, if it is indeed the Galaxy Note 7. Samsung is expected to announce the Galaxy Note 7 on August 2nd which is just under a couple of weeks away. Although nothing is official and confirmed by Samsung, there have been a number of leaks over the past few months which showcase the expected design, specs, and features. Unofficially, just about everything seems to be known about the Galaxy Note 7 save for the price and availability.
While this video does appear to show the iris scanner being used, it is not the first video of the device to pop up online, as a video simply showing off the Galaxy Note 7 powered on was published to YouTube in a hands-on first look just yesterday. It’s important to note that yesterday’s video shows a Galaxy Note 7 device with a curved edge display just like the renders, which is thought to be the production model of the phone that Samsung is putting out on the market. There have also been rumors that Samsung was planning on releasing a flat-screened version of the device, and while they may not release such a product alleged leaked images of the phone have surfaced, and the video of the iris scanner which can be seen below appears to be a prototype model that carries the flat screen.
Despite the fact that the phone in the video is a model with a flat screen and not the curved edges, the iris scanner should be exactly the same and judging by the video it works pretty quickly. The person demoing the functionality wakes the device and then slides up on the screen to unlock it, which prompts the iris scanner unlock to pop up and not more than a second later the the device opens up to the home screen. Since this is very likely to be a prototype model it’s entirely possible that it works just as flawlessly on production models that will be heading out to store shelves. Of course, there will be no way to know that until everything is officially announced.
