The Motorola Moto Z and Moto Z Force are the company’s latest smartphones, set to go on sale in September 2016. The duo was officially introduced last month, and both models have already gained a lot of attention due to several new features, including a modular design and the inclusion of a USB Type-C port. Nevertheless, the new Moto Z lineup is currently missing one mysterious member, which was expected to be unveiled in the coming weeks or months under the “Moto Z Play” moniker. Interestingly enough, however, a newly leaked image indicates that unlike the Moto Z and Moto Z Force, the Moto Z Play could feature a more conventional 3.5mm headphone jack along with a USB Type-C connector.
As most readers are likely aware of, the Moto Z and Moto Z Force have very thin profiles – a characteristic that facilitates their modular design. However, in turn, they no longer possess a regular 3.5mm headphone jack and instead, they rely on the on-board USB Type-C port to connect to Type-C headphones, which are starting to become more and more common. However, the Motorola Z series hasn’t been unveiled in its entirety, and the company is expected to release the so-called Moto Z Play in the foreseeable future. But until that happens, a fresh leaked image allegedly showing the Motorola Moto Z Play being sandwiched by the Moto Z and Moto Z Force, suggests that the Z Play variant will have a more conservative approach and will sport a 3.5 millimeters headphone jack, along with a USB Type-C connector used for recharging the battery and transferring other types of data.
The Motorola Moto Z Play was spotted in AnTuTu’s database earlier this month, and all evidence so far suggests that it will be the more affordable model from the new series, sporting a 5.5-inch AMOLED display with a resolution of 1920 x 1080, and a Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 chipset featuring eight CPU cores coupled with an Adreno 506 graphics chip. As such, it would make a lot of sense for Motorola to fit its budget-friendlier smartphone with a regular 3.5-millimeter jack, as this won’t force prospective customers to spend additional money on dedicated USB Type-C headphones. However, there’s no way to be certain of Motorola’s undisclosed plans or whether or not the leaked image (below) is legitimate, and thus the information remains subject to change.
