In recent years, Chromebooks have been gaining popularity at a rapid pace. While they may not yet be suitable as full PC replacements, they are perfectly suited for many situations, such as education. They work a bit differently than traditional laptop and desktop computers. Most of the software on Chromebooks is web-based, and as a result, is less demanding on the hardware. The drawback to this is that without an Internet connection, a Chromebook is rather limited in functionality, but the benefit is that, because it functions in a very similar manner to a web browser, the Chromebook doesn’t need to be extremely powerful in order to perform the tasks required of it. Chromebooks typically have lower specifications than full-blown personal computers, which makes them significantly less expensive. And of course, running a Google operating system means that they integrate very well with Google services, which is always a plus.
Acer, a popular Chromebook manufacturer, is rumored to be releasing a new entry to their Chromebook line soon. While in the past, the majority of Chromebooks have used Intel processors, this is said to be the first one that will use a MediaTek processor. Named the Chromebook R13, the device will reportedly pack a MediaTek MT8173 quad-core processor, 4 GB of RAM, 16 GB of internal storage (with a 32 GB option also available), Bluetooth, WiFi, and a 13-inch 1920 x 1080 touchscreen. The device may have a flip style screen, and will reportedly only be available in silver. Although it is still only speculation at this point, the inclusion of a touchscreen may be an indicator that this device will be among the new Chromebooks being released that will support Android apps, which will open a whole world of new functionality. With over two million Android apps currently available in the Google Play Store, the ability to use them will expand the capabilities of Chromebooks exponentially.
There is no information available at this time regarding the pricing of the Chromebook R13, nor an expected release date. At this point, nothing has been confirmed, so this information should be considered a rumor until Acer makes an official announcement.
