It was announced today that Huawei have struck a deal with Truecaller to have their app pre-installed on their flagships smartphones. This includes Honor’s smartphones as well, and starts with the Honor 8 which was announced for the US last week and Europe this week. This comes on the heels of Truecaller announcing that they have 90 million monthly active users. Those users are making 500 million calls each and everyday using Truecaller. This shows that Truecaller is a pretty popular app, and it’s about to get even more popular.
Truecaller, for those that may be unaware, is a third-party dialer app which will take over the stock dialer that is installed on every Android smartphone. This is one of the great things about Android is that you are able to go ahead and replace apps like the dialer, messaging and others without having to “hack” or root your smartphone. Truecaller is essentially advanced Caller ID, not only showing you the number of who’s calling, but the rest of their information as well. This is something that Google had been doing with their own dialer app, that is found on Nexus devices, for a while. However, Truecaller takes it to the next level.
Huawei shipped over 40 million devices in 2015 alone. Making Huawei a huge partner for Truecaller, as they are instantly going to be available on another 40 million+ devices. The announcement noted that the app will only be pre-installed on “flagship” smartphones from Huawei, and that starts with the Honor 8. Which means that this agreement does also include Honor – as much as Honor claims to be a separate company from Huawei these days. It’s more bloatware, but that’s not the end of the world. You aren’t forced to use the app, as the stock dialer is still included on the phone. So you can simply disable it if you wish, or give it a try. It’s actually a really great app and worth giving a shot.
Truecaller will be rolling out to Huawei devices in America, the Middle East, North Africa, South East Asia and India by mid-September of this year.
