While the Moto X line is not yet officially dead, Motorola has been steadily moving away for it, with reports indicating that the company has no plans to release any ‘Moto X’ device this year. However, the company has already launched new smartphones as part of its new modular ‘Moto Z’ line, which now consists of the Moto Z and the Moto Z Force, both of which are premium handsets with premium price-tags. The company has long been rumored to add more devices to the lineup, including the Moto Z Play, which is expected to bring modularity to a lower price point to attract a wider audience to its products.
Earlier leaks had already provided us with some details about the upcoming Moto Z Play and we’ve also seen multiple leaked images that have given us a fairly decent idea about how the device is likely to look. However, in a sure sign that Motorola and its parent, Lenovo, are getting ever-closer to making the Moto Z Play official, we now have a few more leaked images that are said to be of the upcoming smartphone. The images are pretty much in line with earlier leaks, showing off the metallic exterior, the camera bump on the rear and multiple pin connectors on the bottom of the back panel, which is a clear indication that much like the earlier Moto Z devices, the Moto Z Play will also support Moto Mods, which is essentially the USP of the Moto Z line.
While the newly-leaked images do not bring any more details regarding the phone’s hardware components, earlier reports, including the Geekbench listing of a Motorola XT1635-01, have revealed a device that’s powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 SoC, sports 3GB of RAM and runs on Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow. A device called the ‘Motorola Vertex’ was imported into India last month, revealing a 5.5-inch 1080p display for an upcoming Motorola smartphone, with some online commentators suggesting that ‘Vertex’ is Motorola’s internal codename for the upcoming Moto Z Play. It’s worth noting that ‘Vertex’ was originally the codename for last year’s Moto X Play, so take it with a pinch of salt if you will. Either way, with so many bits and pieces of rumors coming in from all directions, it will be interesting to see how the actual device turns out.
