BlackBerry Priv owners who are also members of BlackBerry Beta Zone are in for a treat, as a new software update for the said smartphone is now available for download through BlackBerry Beta Zone, ahead of the official launch of the September security patch update. However, as yet the update is available only for certain BlackBerry Priv variants, specifically the variants launched in the Asia-Pacific (APAC) region, along with the model launched in the United States through AT&T, as well as the BlackBerry Privs compatible with Canadian carriers.
Another caveat worth mentioning is that the update is not accompanied by an official change log of any kind, so at the moment there’s little to be said about whatever new content may have been added in this particular software release. What’s certain, however, is that the update’s security patch level shows “September 6th”, which means that the update does feature the latest Android security patch set to be launched early next month. However, if we assume that BlackBerry will sprinkle the update with its own new features and / or bug fixes and improvements, a more detailed changelog is expected to be published after the update will be launched over-the-air to the general public.
Until then, BlackBerry Priv owners and Beta Zone participants who own the AT&T, Canadian, or APAC variants of the phone can download the upcoming update through the beta program. Keep in mind that the download package for the AT&T model appears as “AAG202”, whereas the package for Canadian and APAC models is identified as “AAG191”. As for the official OTA release, we can only assume that BlackBerry aims to release the update to the public as soon as the September Android security patch will be ready to roll-out, at least as long as no major issues will be found during the Beta Zone testing stages. It also remains to be seen if the beta update will eventually be released for other BlackBerry Priv variants including T-Mobile’s and Verizon’s or the unlocked model, or indeed for Beta Zone participants residing in other regions of the world including Europe, Africa, and the Middle East. Whatever the case may be and if everything goes without a snag, the update should be officially launched on September 6.
