It’s definitely no secret that Samsung sees the upcoming Rio 2016 Olympics as a great opportunity to advertise its brand. After paying to become one of the event’s main sponsors in April, the South Korean consumer electronics manufacturer got to work developing an Android app that would cover this year’s summer Olympics. Well, that app has just officially hit the Google Play Store and is available as a free download for everyone sporting a compatible Android smartphone or tablet.
Samsung’s Rio 2016 app was developed in collaboration with the Olympics’ Organizing Committee and boasts numerous features designed to enhance the experience of following this grand sports event. Among other things, the app comes packed with a full schedule of the Olympic games, results, medal counts by country and individuals, and real-time updates on all Olympic and Paralympic sports. It’s also full of various event and venue information, as well as details on all competing athletes. The app will allegedly also soon be updated with a live news feed covering Olympic Games-related news from major online media. At the moment, it already boasts a feed listing all news published by the International Olympic Committee (IOC). Furthermore, this piece of mobile software offers a lot of customization options so that sports fans can customize their app home page and let the app know which sports and fixtures are they most interested in. Naturally, it also offers customizable push notifications. Last but not least, the official Rio 2016 app also features a so-called “Samsung Zone” which covers all of Samsung’s official activities at this year’s Olympics and news related to the Galaxy X Olympics. Not unexpectedly, the app also promotes Samsung’s Members App.
The Rio 2016 Summer Olympics are the tenth consecutive edition of this competition that Samsung has officially partnered with and offered its technological solutions to athletes, officials, and sports fans. The official app is currently available in English, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Japanese, Mandarin Chinese, and Korean. Note that the “official” in the app’s name only refers to the fact that this is the official Samsung app of the upcoming summer Olympics and is by far from the only alternative for following this sports event. For example, an official NBC Olympics app hit Google Play Store six weeks ago and more similar solutions are expected to follow in the coming days.
