Xiaomi has been on a product launching spree of late. Just last month, the company launched the Redmi 3S and Redmi 3S Prime smartphones in India after having launched them in China earlier this year. Generally speaking, the handsets have been well-received due to what is considered to be a stellar level of performance, at a price that’s just a shade over $100. In the midst of all this, the company also found time to launch the Redmi Pro late last month, not to mention its ‘Notebook Air’ range of laptops.
However, even as the company is entering new product categories and breaking new grounds, smartphones continue to remain its bread and butter. After a relatively lean 2015 when it failed to hit its stated sales target of 100 million smartphones and saw Huawei surge past it as the largest smartphone vendor in China, the company will be hoping that its new offerings like the Mi 5 and the upcoming Mi Note 2 will help it achieve that lofty goal this time around. If indeed that has to happen, its Redmi range of affordable handsets will also have to pick up some of the slack and while the Redmi Note 3 is already doing its bit, the company is now apparently getting ready to unleash the next-generation Redmi device if a recent Geekbench listing is anything to go by.
The listing confirms earlier rumors that the Xiaomi Redmi 4 may well be a significant step-up from the Redmi 3 and the Redmi 3S that are currently on sale in China and India. Although, the listing does suggest that the upcoming device will be powered by Qualcomm’s MSM8953 Snapdragon 625 SoC, whose octa-core CPU will be clocked at a maximum of 2.02 GHz. This is in contrast to some of the earlier rumors which suggested the MediaTek Helio P10 64-bit octa-core SoC would be in use. The variant that showed up on Geekbench will seemingly carry 3GB of RAM, but there’s no telling whether Xiaomi will also release other variants with higher or lower amounts of RAM with differentiated pricing. The device will also apparently rock Android 6.0.1 (Marshmallow) out-of-the-box, no doubt with Xiaomi’s very own MIUI interface on top.
